Snow

Heather Baillie-Brown 2013

There is something truly magical about snow. I am not entirely sure of what it is, but there is just something special about it. While it may be cold, it brings warmth into my heart; childhood memories, winter sports and the beauty that it can produce.

This year, I am excited to take part in more in-depth winter photography and film, as well as flying, hanging out with friends and family, working out / sports and many, many more activities. We are truly lucky for our give of seasons here in Canada (although sometimes, they can be a pain). It adds more diversity to this already diverse country and helps us to treasure the summer more, and the warmth of our loved ones.

Just remember to drive safely!

My Elements (If I had to choose)

Okay, okay, I recently finished watching the latest released season of "Avatar". The Anime takes place in a world where some people are "Benders" and can control the four elements: Earth, Fire, Air and Water. Except the magical avatar can master all four and bring peace to the world, etc... However, watching the show (Now "Legend of Korra") I just had to ask myself: If I was in this fictional world, or even our world, what element(s) do I connect the most with?!

Hmm, I believe I am a mix of Air and Water (probably mostly water).

Air

Air seems to be the element of Balance and freedom. For me, I am obviously a pilot and understand the winds, and air through my training, and natural skills. Air is the element of serenity, and it is a factor I reach for in life. Like air, I find the peaceful solution and serenity in situations. (And I can fly through it legally with my licence!)

Water

Water seems to be the element of healing, peace, emotion, and spirit. I think out of all four, that I bond strongest with Water (I know, kind of surprising for a pilot and a non-swimmer), but like water, I live a life of emotional experience, and seek the love and friendship of others. I am a healer of others, and sort of a "cleanser" of problems.

Is Reading Week Really "Reading Week" Anymore?

"Have a fun reading week, everyone!" Our teachers say to us as we pack our bags and quickly vacate the class. While it is called "Reading Week", do the teachers even expect students to do homework at all anymore? While I cannot complain tat I get some more free time to travel, work, etc... I cannot help but feel that there is a loss as well. Education is very important, and should continue outside of school. While most of my teachers made sure I at least "open" my books by placing tests on the first days of returning to school, I feel that we as a province have come to the point that it is basically just a week off to relax.

I don't mind having no assignments, but I do see the public school elementary school system lacking. "Apparently" I have heard that teachers are no longer alowed to give homework to elementary students anymore? (Please correct me if I am wrong). If this is so, I believe this is a mistake of our school system. We must encourage our students of the future to develop good study habits at a young age, for when they become a 19 year old student like me, they will have good, positive habits, and get all their work done BEFORE reading week, so they can enjoy their post-secondary experience better. ;^)

In end, I believe there is a balance between work and play, and we carry our habits into our careers and beyond.

Being Nice to People on the Internet is Possible

Facebook, Twitter, Google and other social networking sites are all places where we store our "internet identities" yet when we head into the world of online video games, forums and MMO's (massive multiplayer online games) we tend to see the darker side of people and "Trolls". This has become a stereotype of these areas, and has become a sad part of society.

Me, being myself, take these stereotypes and throw them out. I am personally a "good samaritan" when it comes to online gaming and forms. When I use my mature, polite voice, I actually sunrise people. Getting replies such as "OMG, YOUR ACTUALLY NICE" to "WOW, there are actually nice people on here" to even" Kudos to this guy for being awesome". It is sad when people are so surprised by one being mature on the interned, but this just shows how far things have come. We have separated reality and our cyber experience.

My advice is be yourself, but in a mature manner. Help bring the positive side to the internet back, and just, well, be NICE! :D

The Government Returns (Today)

Today marks the first day back for the Canadian government after Prime minister Steven Harper prolonged parliament. As a youth in College, and eventually University and beyond, I am interested in the progress that parliament can achieve. I believe it is important for us all to vote our government in, and believe it is even more important for my generation to vote. While fostering a good habit, voting will also make sure that the government supports our ideas and beliefs, something many are forgetting and becoming ignorant with (Which the government hopes for) We can make change in the government, but we have to get off our butts and at least say what we want.

Personally, I am not a fan of Steven Harper nor his Conservative party, and I am more of a left/ centre Liberal voter. I am very excited for Justin Truduea, for I have met him, and agree with much of what he has said, but once again, this is just me, and my own personal experience and opinions. It is up to you to make your own choice.

When parlement returns today, I hope for less fighting, crimes, etc.. And more positive change...

The Magic of Creating Worlds

It doesn't matter if your tool is writing, music, film, painting, dancing, photography, etc... Whatever! Creating worlds through your self-expression is an extraordinary art, indeed! From the many greats such as Shakespeare to more modern world (universe creators) such as George Lucas all create their own worlds through their own artistic ways. Sometimes, the arts can be taken for granted and lose their understanding on how important they really are!

I love creating my own worlds through ALL of the methods I mentioned above (yes, even dancing!) It's just the most remarkable feeling to be able to create through your heart. What you create is yours, yet can feel like it can grow and become larger than a universe, if not two!

If you never tried making your own world(s) before, just try it! And you might be surprised with what you end up with! Who knows! You might be the next J.K. Rowling, or the first (insert your name here!)

Have fun!

My Life as a College Student: Simplified

Yup, College is already a month in, but it feels like I have been here forever. Morning commutes up the Highway 400 are not as bad as I had previously thought, although that is bound to change when Winter comes around!

College itself is easy. While it may not be a challenging as I had hoped, I have found comfort in the friends and experiences I have had. As well as keeping me busy when I am not on one of my four day weekends, College is so far deemed an "okay" experience. More to come in the future!

The Art of Creativity and Expression

There really is no right or wrong way when it comes to the artist expression of the human spirit. In my own personal experience, it is one of my favourite things to do! Everyone has their own means of expression; through music, poetry, painting, drawing, writing... The list goes forever onward.

While expressing your creative side may seem like one of the easiest things to do, I believe it is actually one of the most hardest. The hardest part is starting. That's it. You can say to yourself "I am going to write a book" all day, and sit at that table with your notepad or laptop. However, you need to start. Inspiration comes and goes in mysterious ways. While you feel you want to write, you cannot arrange your chaotic, ever changing thoughts. You feel inspired to spill a world onto a piece of paper, but cannot command the first strokes of your pencil. Starting is always the hardest part, but when you start, it is hard to stop.

After "breaching the wall" of starting your creativity vomit, it then flows freely from you to your work. One must be sure that they do not create the habit of failure (continuos quitting because lack of starting) Just start. Even if you are drawing lines, or writing the same musical note over and over, just start. You might be surprised in what your work mutates into.

As I write this, I attempt to try and get rid of my own starting issues; my "writers block / artistic block". I will keep going till I do, and I hope that you will do the same.

So Much out of Nothing

So much is happening, yet at the same time, nothing is happening at all. Life really does work in strange, and sometimes mysterious, indirect ways.

From nothing comes something. The something coming in many forms: an idea, act, thought, feeling, person, place, object, the list goes on...

Life continues on, yet feels like time is at a stand still. Motionless. What is this otherworldly magic of time moving while still?

We hope for the future, yet must live the present. the future is forever changing; being affected by our actions in the present. You create the road, for there will be no road without you. You can make something out of nothing.

College!

Oh! How fast time does go!

I have now begun a new chapter in my life. College feels weird. While it still may be only the first week or so, I hope that I have made the right choice. Not knowing where I want to be in my future for a career, I feel some pressure from the future, yet I must remember to live in the present and live my life.

I hope college is the challenge, as well as the amazing time I thought it will be. There is only one way to find out on this stepping stone to University, and the future.

Yoga

While I have been working out full time for a while now, I have only most recently added Yoga into my training routine. I have discovered that I made the right choice and that Yoga indeed helps both the mind and body. It really is amazing what happens when one relaxes to the point of meditation.

Yoga helps balances the body and keeps the body's flexibility and overall health in check. THere are also major mental health benefits from the level of relaxation and peace that one can experience.

I really love the flexibility Yoga gives. It helps me feel free and at home in my own body. I highly recommend it to anyone!

Flying friends and family

While my life in the world in aviation is only beginning, I can safely say that one of the most joyous and heartfelt experiences is taking friends and family flying. Sharing the gift of flight is a remarkable feeling, and never grows old. Every flight is different and unique in its own way. The best part is that is is ALWAYS fun to do. Letting someone fly for a bit, to even doing a few "exciting" aerial manoeuvres keeps the heart, as well as human spirit going at a fast pace. In a way, this is also how my story in aviation took off. Flights bought by my parents and those given to me through Air Cadets brought me the goal to pursue my pilots licence, and that I did. I learned that if you want something, go for it. Dream big, you deserve it! And this experience through flight, I can share, and prove to others that anything is possible.

19

For many days now, I have passed another birthday on my journey of life. While it felt like any normal year, it somehow felt different in my heart. While I still had a few friends over like every other year, this is my last birthday before post-secondary education. This is a big step in my life, for the next chapter in my life is here. While it is also the first birthday I spent at home (been with cadets every other year) and this is my first year that I can now legally drink, I still feel somewhat confused and disoriented. Such feeling are to be expected, due to the nature of the changes that are happening and will happen in a short time. Growing up, I now have to budget my time. Friends here, a LOT of work there, school, workout, shooting films, flying, traveling, etc... The list goes on.

While I may have mixed feelings about my future right now, I know I must move on from the past filled with good times, bad times, broken hearts and adventures had. Time to continue moving down the road we call life.

The human heart is very confusing (Part 2 of 2) closure

It feels nice to have closure,
to have been able to talk to you,
for us to be able to both share our feelings,
on a wonderful walk with me and you.

Both of us spoke many words and stories,
no tears shed, just honest opinions and thoughts on relationships and life,
too much going on then and needed rest,
fine a while ago but now off to university and life and the known of the unknown.

No more thinking what-ifs,
I can move on and let you live you life,
find my own path,
you go to the sun.

Thank you for being an amazing friend,
we will always be,
see you around,
My feelings can now go as I move on with closure, to the dawn of tomorrow.

Done Highschool forever! AGAIN!

Well, the victory lap is finally over. While the first half was for Physics and Comm tech courses, the second semester was an easy Leadership and Writers Craft kind of time. While I may not miss the courses themselves, I will miss the regular outings with friends and what not. Haha, I guess I will be seeing them more often over the summer, though! :^D

It was worth it taking a victory lap, ESCECIALLY meeting some awesome people and making some good memories. Although I have to say, I am finally glad that school is done once again. Time to move onto greater things. Good bye, Innisdale... Again!

Leap of Faith

Sometimes, there comes an event in our lives that we just have to leap into and have trust in yourself. A very large aspect of this "leap of faith" philosophy right now in my life is asking a special girl out. I'm not going to go into any detail due to respect of privacy, (and common sense) but I just want to say that I have learned in the past to always follow your heart and at least TRY, or else you will be plagued with regret and the "what-ifs". If it will be a yes or a no, I am unsure, but never being in a relationship before, either way it is going to be a "learning curve" and a fun experience. At this point in time, I really don't mind if it a yes or no. I just want to know the answer so I can move on with my life. Honesty is key. She is a smart, beautiful, fun and mature woman, and I know we will be great friends either way, so as one famous doctor once said... "Allons-y!"

The Glass

I dropped a fragile glass, that has shattered into a million pieces.

I feel injured from it, both from the pain of such a beautiful glass being destroyed, as well as the shards scarring my foot.

Did I take the glass for granted, or was this the way that things are suppose to be? Am worthy of such a glass being in my hands in the first place?

I may never know, for the glass lays cold, and broken on the ground. My heart shattered into a million million pieces.

The human heart is very confusing (Part 1 of 2) Before

I see you with my eyes, yet feel you with my heart,
The emotions that describe you cannot become words,
for if they did, they would not be able to describe you,
because there are no words to describe how brilliant you truly are.

I first met you a while back, shy and new in my life,
A flame newly lit,
yet still burning,
Was this love? Then, I just never knew.

Over time, the sands eroded the confusion and showed the truth,
I fell in love with you,
all of you,
the good of all that was and remains to be you.

There you were in my life every day,
the reason I went to events was to be with you even it was for a few seconds,
it was worth every second,
I love you.

The question remained though,
do you love me too?
We've spent so much time together telling stories and I have gotten to know you,
and you gotten to know me.

Do you share the same feelings?
I really cannot tell,
Are these hangouts and smiles genuine,
Or are you with another one of the guys?

I work so hard, yet none at all,
I should reveal my feelings,
yet past mistakes raise the stakes,
the grueling feeling of failure.

I want to ask you out so much,
yet will thou say yea or neh?
My friends and yours support me,
but is there another player in the Frey?

I don't want to hurt you,
did I ever before?
I want this friendship to last forever,
so could it be more?

Only honesty will tell, let the game come to the end,
I want to say what I have to say, and  let you listen like you always do,
so let us go for a walk,
the human heart is confusing.

Stories and advice from a Submarine Commander (to me)

Sometimes, we find advice and knowledge in ways we do not necessarily expect. One night at work, I found this very scenario to be the case. When I worked at my workplace before as a seasonal, there was a nice, yet firm gentlemen who told me to get "out of this workplace" I often wondered why. Of course, I wasn't going to work there forever, I just needed money for my first year of post-secondary school and of course, the teenage lifestyle. However, a few nights ago, I learned why he gave the advice, and the heart behind the story.

He was a lot like me when he was in his youth. Yet instead of being in cadets, he was in the reserves at the age of only 17. He wanted to be a submarine Commander, this was his goal in life. After trying to get into RMC (he couldn't get in because of math, I have the same problems with numbers as he does) He did direct entry into the Canadian Navy. With the Cold War being at its height in the 80's, it seemed as if he were to get action soon. He was very close to becoming an officer until he quit the Navy to be with his new girlfriend. (she left him after a little while) After being heartbroken by his sweetheart, he couldn't return to the Navy for other reasons and so he got into retail. This is when he joined the company I work at many, many years ago, and has remained since to support mortgage, family and life.

It really is a sad story to hear. One losing their dreams and not being able to follow their path throughout life. Quitting the Navy is a choice he regrets to this day, and tries his damn hardest to make sure no one makes the same mistake. "Focus" is the word he used when describing me his story. Focus on your goals and dreams. He loved that I am taking Aviation Management, due to  the area of business where I can start my own company and follow my bliss.  He knew that I was an Air Cadet for 7 years and believes I have shown leadership skills and aptitude for following my heart and achieving my goals. I feel happy to know that he is starting to follow his own new path of the arts and self-expression. But I am internally grateful for the gift that he reminded me about: focus.

Cadets - My Journey

This past week, I saw my old cadet squadron's annual parade, and then my friends sea cadet annual.   Looking back, I feel so amazed with what I accomplished with joining Air Cadets. I am happy and grateful for all seven and a half years, all of the good times with the memories they brought, and the bad times that helped me grow as a person.

It was a hard decision to leave cadets, especially early (long story) but it was something that I had to do. All the friends made, adventures that were had and goals achieved, it was a remarkable journey that I wish everyone I know could experience, especially the sense of comradery.

There are a few things I wish I could do over, but at the same time, I am proud of the path I made, and skills I've learned. With their motto of "To learn, To serve and to Advance" I think that I really did get all three pieces of the pie!

Probably the largest achievement that I had while in the program was achieving my goal of my PPL (Private Pilots License) but probably the most important thing I did was earn the respect of not only my entire squadron, but all of the people I had met throughout the entire cadet experience.

Where I will be heading next is still unclear, but the roads I have already traveled have revealed a path leading to great people, adventures and dreams that I could only hope to imagine.

Privacy Please

Online privacy has always been an issue, but recently it has been on the front pages of most news sources. With the United States’ top secret internet division exposed and multiple American companies being part of PRISM, and even the government being allowed to look at ones desktop, one may ask if there is there even such thing as privacy anymore?

From being children, we all understand that what happens on the internet stays on the internet, so we try to use common sense and avoid doing stupid things on facebook or Twitter, etc.. However, when the government is allowed to track your phone records, personal e-mails, texts, photos, calendars and uses on devices you bought from Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc… It is all getting out of hand.

While governments say that it is for “protection” it seems that this is no longer the case. Now, it seems that governments just want to watch their own people instead of real problems such as terrorism and hate crimes. If the government really cared about these negative topics, they would create filters, ASK people to use info, and actually follow their own charter of rights and freedoms! Be transparent and let the public have a choice! THEY are the ones who have elected YOU in! Without THE PUBLIC you don't have a job!

I feel concerned how much technology is becoming part of living, and how many people continue to remain oblivious to the privacy crisis currently at hand. If this is the shape of “privacy” now, what will governments do in ten, or even five? Any thoughts? Add your comments bellow.

A blog post about blogging...

Blogging really is amazing, isn't it? I mean, ten years ago, the only real things you could do were write in a journal, send your news to the TV stations or news papers or even just pass a message along peer-to-peer, but the progression of the internet (in the case, the evolution of blogging) has changed this all completely!

Blogging is a great way to vent, keep a journal, become a journalist, share stories, etc... and technically its free! (well, blogger anyways)

I am so very happy and grateful I started blogging, for it is great for ones writing skills, and keeps me thinking and on my feet. The best part is that I don't feel "forced" into doing it, but instead, I actually enjoy it when I can add an entry.

If you have EVER thought of blogging, just give it a go! Why not? Who knows, you might even become an addict like me! ;^)

Cheers,

Henry

E3 Coming!

Wow, one more week until the world's largest video game conference! Woot! I have a few ideas of what I want to see, but the surprises are always the best! (If they are positive for the players) Here are a few of the things I am looking forward to:

  1. PS4 System: I REALLY want to see what the new system looks like, but also how Sony will incorporate other elements such as the new controller and Playstation eye, cell phones, tablets, etc... Its going to be good!
  2. Used game problems: I just want all of the large corporations to be honest about the next generation of used games. Obviously, there are probably going to be some consequences on the used game industry, it just matters how severe. I really just want them to be honest and come out and say what they have to say without any B.S.
  3. Star Fox: Nintendo, if you want me back after so many bad years for me, announce a damn Star Fox game already and stop with the continuous Mario and Zelda games! Oh, wait, too late, here comes another Mario :^P
  4. GOOD Games: Obviously, I want to be blown away by the next gen games. Not just amazing graphics, but as well as revolutionary stories and game play. There is so much hype, I just hope that this is all for nothing,

Switching over to Linux (laptop anyways) Good bye windows!

I have finally decided to make the jump and get rid of Windows 7 on my old laptop. While still "trialing" different versions of Linux, I am already confident that Linux is a "million" times better than its windows counterpart.

I am trying Ubuntu, a Linux platform that is one of the most popular in the world. Running faster, with smarter coding and a smoother workflow, Ubuntu is a remarkable step up from a windows 7 system. While I love Linux, I am actually installing it beside windows due to the sole fact that programs such as Adobe or Office will not work with Linux, so I can choose which operating system I boot with when I turn on my computer.

I am excited to see it fully installed, and along with the many exciting features that come along with it, such as no viruses, and more customization.

The new Xbox is definatly NOT the One (opinion)

The "Box-O-Doom"

"Xbox, go home." That is all I can say to a system and corporation that did a "less-than-par" presentation. While E3 (The ultimate annual gaming convention based in California where all the major names in gaming show off their latest tech) is still only a few weeks away, the new "Xbox One"  promised to be a next-gen super console, but wound up being a "blob" of Microsoft operating systems.

I am very bias when it comes to Microsoft. I really do not like how they create their very, very expensive operating systems and them try to get even MORE money out of the consumer by not providing everything, such as office (which is now a paid subscription) But Microsoft codes things so they can look nice, but take up a lot of space. With three operating systems running at the same time, I can see a lot of errors and processing power being used unnecessary.

Its just the way Microsoft does things, plus with Kinect, its VERY scary. The user HAS to have Kinect connected at all times. This means, someone can hack into your living room and listen / see you any time of the day, not to mention the implications from big brother.

I really plan of staying away from the new Xbox One (Which is not the "One" box you are going to have, due to you still needing your cable box, your satellite box and your old 360 (its not backwards compatible))

For the moment, I believe the PS4 is defiantly the future for console gaming, for both the Wii U and Xbox one are both falling behind on both their own legacies, as well as gamers.

Put your thoughts in the comments bellow, people!

What is the government doing?! More on the ACGP / Power pilot problems from Harper

Just a quick update: A recent document that appeared on the "Save Air Cadet Gliding" web site revealed e-mails between cadets and officers. According to the Officer staff, this year, the program will be experimenting with giving 5 cadets per flight center their "recreational pilot permit" instead of giving them their full fledged private pilots license. They want to get ten times more cadets flying, but at the cost of the countries best scholarship. I wont be surprised if this "experiment" goes well, that they will scrap the power pilot scholarship all together, and replace it with this cheaper, easier permit option. These seem to be VERY dark days for the Air Cadet flying programs, as Steven Harper spends money on purchasing ads for things that aren't even passed by parliament yet, instead of giving the millions of dollars to support Air Cadet flying. Way to go, money pants :^P

Why the Wii U is a Darn Flop

Ah, Nintendo. When I was a kid, I loved it. Today, I could care less. When I was young, Nintendo made amazing content. While the N64 was my first console, the GameCube was the gaming station for most of my childhood. While playing Star fox, Star Wars and many other games, I was instantly drawn into immersible stories and worlds. I also have vivid memories of playing games at parties or sleepovers with the guys as we played four player games such as Star Wars: Clone Wars. Eventually, the Wii came along and promised more "interesting experiences." This is when Nintendo lost me to Sony and my PC as a gamer. As they continued with the Wii, they lost my loving franchises such as Star Fox, Star Wars and other timeless classics. The Same is for the Wii U, but only more obvious.

Out of all the gamers I know, NONE of them own, or even talk about the Wii U. My generation doesn't really feel for it due to it continuing to lack those "core" features. Firstly, where are the games? While the Nintendo conference is VERY soon, the console launched with only a few titles, and the crew at Nintendo pulled an EA and went "silent mode" on talking about future titles. This killed sales of the Wii U due to no real value of owning one. Sure, it comes with a tablet, but my iPad can easily out perform it, and its a year older than the Wii U. In the end, Nintendo seems to be less focused in the Western market.

Nintendo, my question is WHY. Why should anyone buy your console? What makes it stand out above the new PS4 and Xbox 720? WHY should I spend money on it as a core gamer? Personally, I am going to stick with the PS4 and my upgraded PC. Hell, even my GameCube from 2002!

Gay? Transgender? Straight? We are all human! It shouldn't matter how we all identify ourselves!

Please note, this article is about mature themes. While not religious myself, I talk a lot about religion, stupid people and the like, so please bear with me.

In the end, we really are all just human. Why should it matter how one identifies themselves? Those who ban gay marriage in their place of living, yet allow guns in schools obviously have some issues, so all I am asking is why? Why are people against it? Sure, it might be "different" than normal, but what is normal? Heck, today, there are more people living single lives than married. People argue saying that it is their religion, and that god says so and you shall go to hell, etc.. Well, I have to personally say that that's bogus. If there is anyone that it is bad, it is the neigh-sayers for not accepting and seeking to understand their fellow human brother, sister or other. Why do you call someone who follows their heart 'evil' when you try to assimilate people into your "collective" like the Borg from Star Trek? Why do you encourage hate? Why not encourage love?

I personally think that humanity needs gay, transgender, etc... peoples. They add culture, and remind us that we are ALL living our own lives. They are the image of courage and following ones bliss. While I may be "straight" I have many friends that are gay or lesbian, and they really are GREAT people. It shouldn't matter how they identify themselves through this thing called "gender."

Gender is the idea of separating humanity into girls and boys. Today, we are aware that it is not so simple, or "black and white" but more of a grey spectrum with many shades between. We are ALL different, and we must learn to love our fellow humans if we want to create a better tomorrow.

Drones = Debate!

An MQ-9 Predator drone taxing. Source
Today, technology has come such a large way in a mere hundred years. For example: flight. Starting off with a little wood and canvas, the flying machines then gained larger fuselages, better engines and eventually weapons as a tool of war. Throughout time, the airplane has become such a remarkable feat of human engineering. Being able to take people around the world, transport cargo anywhere you want, send relief supplies around the globe and of course, be a means of military air superiority.

Today, drones are being used by countries around Earth, most notably the United States. While it is remarkable what they can do while not putting a human pilot's life on the line such as having the drone fly over Afghanistan while the pilot drinks coffee at home in the good 'ol USA. Drones are becoming today's keepers, but without the human element.

It is a very scary thought that these machines can have a mind of their own. Executing orders without human interaction. The loss of the human element of decision making means that it basically comes down to the numbers. When human judgement can save lives, a drone only has programming that serves as its morals. One day, the US may be in the situation when drones such as the MQ-9 predator drone (see photo above) may be authorized to patrol across the United States. It is a very scary thought that a government can have so much control with machines.

A big concern is a sense of "Battlestar Galactica Syndrome."  While the machines may not start thinking for themselves, hackers can basically hack into any computer. It has already been proven that hackers can hack into, and control US drones.

While they can provide protection, drones can also become the bars of the cage that can hold the world under fear.

Thank you: More than just words

They really are... People have gained friendships, jobs, opportunities,  and so much more by using these two simple, yet effective words. However, it is not just the ability to say these words in your language, but also feel them; you mean it. With sincere gratitude comes sincere results. When you display your gratitude for a person or situation, other people notice this, and your feelings become contagious with those around you. The next time someone holds a door open for you, remember to say "thank you." The next time someone gives you a tip at work, say "thank you" and when someone you love gives you a bear hug, squeeze out the words "thank you." Be happy for what you have in your life, you deserve to be happy, and never take anything for granted.

Surrounded by Awesome People

I really am. All around, I see future doctors, pilots, writers, artists, astronauts, politicians, environmentalists and more. The world of tomorrow, here in the friends and peers of today. I am so very lucky to be surrounded by such great people. I have friends over in Ghana, saving the world to people in the Canadian forces protecting Canada and the world. I am surrounded by amazing people.

We really have to remember to take a step back and remind ourselves how lucky we are to have the special people in our lives and remember to never take them for granted. However, while realizing how amazing others our, one must remember to also be amazed by him or herself.

Air Cadet Gliding Program Dead?

Flying out at CFB Borden

A few weeks ago, I received an e-mail from my local Cadet Gliding Center that was concerned about the topic of budget cuts to the Air Cadet Gliding Program (ACGP) To my sad realization  it appears that those realizations are coming true. While not confirmed yet, many do believe (including myself) that the current government is stupid enough to go through with these cuts, if not destroying the gliding program all together. Check out the multiple support groups that are everywhere, including on facebook here.

A year after prom: seeing the next generation go

It really does feel weird. My generations prom feels as if it adjust yesterday, yet here goes the next generation already! It's been hard today, for I didn't have an enjoyable experience at prom, for I never "followed my heart" and asked the girl I liked out. This is why I hope that tonight, everyone will follow their hearts. When they see that girl or guy they have feelings for, I hope they will ask them to dance, and have fun, don't make the same mistake as me, or it will be on your mind with no escape. Live your lives.

While I do feel a few feelings of lonely ness and general sad feelings, I do feel as I have grown over the past year. Through many unique experiences and learning to deal with these "odd feelings," I have had an interesting journey since my generations prom.

I guess it's better to learn this incredibly hard lesson now rather than later.

My best wishes and luck to those attending prom tonight! Remember, follow your hear, and live your life!

Kids have too much protection today.

It really is one of those "delicate" topics to mention, yet as a 1990's baby, I can definitely vouch for that statement.  In elementary schools today, Kids are no longer allowed to hug, play tag, dodge ball, show certain feelings, etc.. And this in in Canada. If is very sad how children are being put into a bubble and are no longer allowed to have certain adventures that I had with my friends when I was a kid. Even with television programming, the home environment and just society overall. It seems that people believe that putting their children into a "safer, more protective" environment will benefit then, yet I think that this is the entire opposite.

The entire idea of being a "kid" has also changed. kids today have smart phones, facebook, online games, etc... Things we NEVER had when me and my generation were in their shoes! I am only 18, but now I am starting to know the feeling my parents felt with the generation gap in technology.

We just have to remember to let kids be, well, kids! Let them get dirty in the mud, or go for adventures!

USA Needs gun control and common sense

Warning: If you are a very highly patriotic American, or love guns, please refrain from reading this article. Yes, that means you.

From the bellow link *Moms Demand Action" - Very powerful, and sadly true.

Above are just a few of an unlimited amount of links relating to people asking the question of "how is it possible that anyone can buy a military assault weapon." They are not used for hunting, that is what hunting rifles and bows, etc... are for. The assault style weapon is made for one use: killing people. If the USA wants to see less gun related deaths, I believe that gun control really is something the government should  take more seriously instead of bickering with the NRA who says that they want to "put guns in schools..." WHAT?!

I find it VERY sad how the US senate can pass bills on banning gay rights for certain areas (I know, its only certain individual states that do it) but they say NO to banning assault style weapons, because it is their "right" to defend themselves. Well, I am sorry, but this fact is just plain stupid. Firstly, once again the assault style weapon such as an M4 Carbine is used to attack and invade countries. If you want to feel safe, how about having a better community and banning weapons used to kill people instead of ENCOURAGING everyone to have them?! Secondly, the declaration of independence in SEVERELY out of date. Mind you that it was created right after the civil war, when there were still many parts of north America overrun with wilderness. Having a weapon was helpful to survival. Today, these facts are exactly the opposite. You no longer need a weapon to survive, just go to your American Walmart or Target.

The Link above from Moms Demand Action provides some VERY powerful pictures and facts about the entire subject. All I can really say is do your research and make your own opinion. Any thoughts? Comment bellow!
Not allowed to play doge ball, but want to put guns in school

Can't have junk food, but can have guns *NRA wants to put guns in schools

Sometimes, we need to learn from our friends and peers

Social skills are VERY important to have, especially in today's modern technologically advanced world. yet, we must remember to get rid of the screens every now and again and return to face-to-face so we remember what the 'real' social world is. When with our friends, we can learn a lot about others, interactions with other people, problem solving and even ourselves! Friends are friends because they obviously like you back as well, and accept who you really are. Therefor, meeting and hanging out with friends shouldn't be a hassle, but it is when conflict, or asking others different questions when one starts to see the results of interaction.

What I am trying to say is remember to look at people from not just yours, but also their perspective. Use empathy before you judge someone. Accept constructive criticism and suggestions from others, but remember to pay attention to how others react in other situations. I am a 'person watcher' who likes to see how people react to situations, and I feel as if by watching others, I am more socially aware of the world around me.

Screw it, just frigging do it

Sometimes in life, there are those moments when you ask yourself "why am I not doing this" or "I want to do this, but I am just not" or "I wish I could do this idea or goal" or "I wish I could be doing this or that." Sometimes, you just have to stop thinking and just GO! Take a leap of faith, try something new and just do it!

That is my life advice for the day.. Now get off your computer (or whatever device you are on) and go do something fun that you've always wanted to do! Go skydive, start that workout or talk to that 'person' GO!!! :^D

I love my family!

Chilling with the cousins down in Oakville

I love my family. I am so lucky that I have such a caring, loving, diverse and adventures bunch of pals to share life with. It really is remarkable how amazing everyone is. All beautiful and unique in their own, brilliant way. From the more "elder" side of the spectrum to the "youngling" side, our family is very strong, and is full of love for each other, as well as a love for making the world a better place. From building schools in Africa, to serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, to helping  the community, to raising special dogs to help the challenged, my family is a 'super family.'

They are also all very gifted. From athletes, to travelers, to those who are bilingual in French and English, and those who can speak Klingon, they are all fantastic. I am surprised every time, and I am honored by their presence, as well as smiles. They make life fun, and can make any day a sunny one.

Thanks, everyone! Rock on! ;^)

The power of a good story.

It really is amazing how a story can impact our lives. The narrative can be through a film, or book, screen play or even spoken word. It is beautiful how the translation of a series of events can be shared between human minds as a story. I feel like we take the entire process of story telling for granted. It doesn't matter if the works are fiction or non-fiction, but I feel as if it is a dying art, just like handwriting is being replaced by typing.

While there are may brilliant pieces of art still released today, the worlds media seem to just be focusing more on quantity over quality (just like the article about EA earlier). We are seeing more mindless movies about just explosions and action, combined with horrible stories and plots. I feels as if it is going to be hard to find another magical experience that truly entices the imagination of the audience. Works such as the earlier Disney movies, Star Wars, the classics, may never be seen again as new ideas.

It seems that society is becoming a thing that craves a short sense of excitement and then mindlessly wandering off, instead of having a narrative; a true experience that will blow one's mind. Short films that we will only remember for a few days and then that will be forgotten by next week instead of the films or books such as Harry Potter that has inspired an entire generation into reading, or using their imagination.

The Road to becoming a famous Youtuber - 1

This year, I am finally starting my goal of creating a successful Youtube brand, and learning to master the basics of the industry. For the name of the channel, I wound up choosing "Supersonicclank." The username that I created around 2009 for my first time playing Battlefield 2 online.

While I am still working on most of the admin, art and paperwork side of things, I am, however, pleased to announced that the main focus will be on gaming, tutorials and a few other snippets. A VLOG channel may be started down the line, but I've always wanted to do one!

I will share more updates as they come, but I can forward you to the new beta of supersonicclank.weebly.com  to get a more clearer understanding of what's going on! Cheers!

Slam Poetry: Ode to Socks

Here's a random / funny slam poem I made and preformed for my writers craft class:

Socks. People wear them!

For too many times, you are taken for granted, my dear sock. Oh! How thou makuth my feet comfy, luxurious and warm, yet I simple throw you into the laundry room at the end of the day, not a single word said. Your fluffiness is beyond measure as you care for me, and love me without issue. Even as I throw in the dreaded dryer tissue.

You cover my feet as you cover my heart with your soft, innocent skin, and today, I thank you for thou friendship.

For all the times I have abused thee, you have never abandoned. Just like a pirate and his loyal bird, or a knight and his trusty steed, you have always followed me on adventures throughout my life. Through the hot, cold, wet and dry, whatever, you have always stayed, and filled your home on my feet.
You are low, yet so high as I walk forward in life, with your assistance. While the going can go rough, and the shoes may stink, I wish to let you know, my heart stinks even more, of realizing how much I took thee for granted. For the many wash cycles of life, day after day, the fluffiness of life may depart, yet you continue through hell to hug me. I put all of my weight of my life on you, but you always get through even when I do not. A you fill the empty spaces between my shoe and my foot, my empty parts of my heart are filled.
And your brothers, and sisters, throughout the world. Different sizes, colours, styles and shapes. Let them know this message of gratitude.

Thank you, my dear sock, thank you. And I love you.

Naked Yoga?!

I just found the idea interesting. Not because people are naked, but just that it really does give away that last feeling of "ego" so then one can truly learn to relax and focus more. I love how people after naked yoga accept their bodies more often than regular people because they must shed their last hints of material wealth and just take a moment to be nothing else, but human. That's a little bit of philosophy for today. Any thoughts?!

Love loops (triangles)

You know those times when You REALLY like one person, but that person you like REALLY likes this other person, but that other person doesn't like them, but the one person still likes them? Yeah. It sucks.

Sometimes you wish that it was a perfect world and everything worked out. That every time someone falls in love, that their opposite understands, and shares the feeling; that we are all magnets attracting the other halt.

One could avoid the pain, and the sadness when you find out the person you like doesn't feel the same way about you, but asks you for help getting this other person to fall in love with them, but that other person has the yearning to be with another person. This loop just goes on and on. Sometimes, you find a hole in the cycle, sometimes, things work out and its just like a wonderful, loving scene from a book. But I have not yet experienced that for myself.

My very own workout plan

I am fortunate enough to have a friend that is going into nursing, so I had her help me develop a workout plan for me! It is just a reminder to myself how lucky I really am to have amazing and talented friends. I am very excited to start it, and we are both possibly going to be working in the same gym so she can show me the ropes.

First time as the PIC in a Cessna 172

Flying away in my first conversion flight!

It felt nice getting current on another aircraft. While feeling a little more slower and sluggish than a Diamond Katana, the Cessna 172 is by far a great aircraft for learning on. This also marked the first time I flew around my home town, so now I can take family and friends flying more easier.

The Many Wonderful Perks of Being Single

If you want to date me, please refrain from reading this blog ;^)
Hmm, Single while everyone else has a partner? Don't sweat it! (Pic by me)

Yes, I know, it's shocking. Perks of being single? What? Why? Well, for a long time, I've been moaning and groaning on both the past and the present about relationships and how they look so awesome, and I've wanted to experience one and all that. I finally took a step back and took a look at my situation. One day (hopefully) I will find that first true love person, and everything will sort its self out. Until then, guess what? i'm single. So why be sad about the cards your dealt? Sometimes, you just have to suck it up and 'deal' with it (Card pun, tee hee) So I looked at all the perks of being single, and it made life a little easier for me.

  1. You can hang out with whoever you want: Since I don't have a girlfriend, I can hangout with any girl or guy I want without being questioned about 'loyalty.' I'm honestly an honest person, but I can live without all that drama of being 'taken.'
  2. You still have Money: They say having another half is healthy for your soul, but disastrous for your pocket book. After every holiday, birthday etc... I've had friend groaning because they are spending so much money taking their boyfriend or girlfriend out. Luckily  I don't have to worry about it, and can save money for university, flying and single, anti-social things.
  3. Dreams of 'that' person: Since I'm single, I don't know what my future will be like! Will i meet someone in a coffee shop? In an airport? On the moon? Who knows! I can have hope of meeting that 'right' person to be with.
  4. Me time: While it can sometimes feel like a curse, having a lot of 'me' time feels great. You can sit, read, write, run and many other things whenever your life dictates, and you are free to do so instead of having to look after another person.
  5. Maturity: While dating seems to be apart of growing up, luckily  I've missed most of the drama and heartbreak that comes with 'young love.' Even if I have NEVER been in a relationship, I am always the friend who is counselling others about their relationships. I feel as if I have learned a LOT from being on the outside, and feel more mature about it.
  6. Closer to friends: Without that other force in your life tearing you away, you can spend more times with friends! While it may feel like your stuck in the friend zones of all the girls you know, it still feels nice to be able to get close to everyone when being single.
  7. Personal development: This should be your top priority regardless of your relationship status, but being single means that you really only have one person to worry about: YOU!
  8. Live your life: You have no tie downs! Let your wings soar!

Justin Treadeau - Liberal Leader

Me and Justin after a very interesting conversation in Barrie, 2012.
I am truly happy that Justin Trudeau has achieved the role of being the new Liberal party's leader. I remember when he first started his campaign in the later stages of 2012. He visited many communities around Canada, and I was fortunate that he visited mine. just a three minute drive from my home, Justin stopped in at a local restaurant to give his people a speech, as well as promoting his campaign. I never felt so empowered by an individual before. One can watch speeches on television and in films, but when you have a Trudeau in the room, you emotional state changes with a surge of excitement and dedication to change. Possibly the most memorable part of his speech was when he talked about being a Canadian. Something that I really loved he mentioned was Vimy Ridge, the WWI battle when Canada first fought as one as all four Canadian divisions held their ground and took the ridge. Justin explained that this is when he believed, Canada became united as a country. This, I absolutely agreed with.

I shook his hand and looked into his eyes, and for that brief few moments, when we hugged, I felt that true connection. I am proud to be a Canadian, and as a young man, I support him with his new leadership role, and hope when elections roll around, that I shook the hand of the future prime minister of Canada.

Better posting schedule incoming + Other things

Hey! I just want to apologize that I am not necessarily consistent in posting. (This apology is for myself, but most importantly you, the reader.) I just wanted to let you know that I will have more discipline in posting here more regularly, as well as I am going to actually start using my website henrybailliebrown.com, and my youtube channel more effectively and more often. That is all!

Dear mini-me (Contest entry for StudentAwards.com)

For a scholarship last month, I entered a contest for a scholarship. The rules were simple: Write to your younger self about if you could do it all again, what would you change? Here is my entry:

If I could do it over again (through the magical Student Awards Time Machine), I would tell my younger self that it is OK to fail.

Life is meant to be enjoyed, so have fun. Don’t be living a life of fear in feeling that if you try something and you don’t succeed, you are a failure. This is not true. Life is about making mistakes and learning from them. If you don't succeed the first time, its OK! Try again, and again until you get it, alright?

You failed to get into the Air Cadet Glider camp TWICE, but the third time, you didn't get in again, but you got a special scholarship to York Soaring because you are such an amazing person! This also goes for asking "you-know-who" out to prom. Now being in a victory lap, it my greatest regret not asking her out. Just be yourself and ASK! It's OK if you fail, at least you tried and gave it your best shot! At least you KNOW.

You can only live your life once, alright, buddy. I want you to enjoy it to the max, so its OK to take risks with a possible outcome of failure. Imagine if Neil Armstrong never went to the moon because he was afraid of the mission failing! (which was a major possibility)

Never give up on your dreams, Henry. Never say no to them, just live your life.

With love from your future self,

Henry

Why I Am So Nice

Sometimes, I look at myself in the mirror and wonder: Why am I so nice to people? It is a simple question that I cannot find a simple answer to. I've been thinking (probably too much) lately on the answer to why. Here are a few of my many thoughts:

As a friend, I've always helped those closest to me. The assistance may take the form of 'counselling' to helping get ready for a job interview, to teaching a topic to someone, to helping them with relationships, confidence and even goal setting. While I might not be repaid, I still give it my 110% when helping. I think I do it for a few reasons.

1. That what friends do! I care, and love my friends. I WANT to see them succeed in life, and will try my darnest to give them the tools to do so. While the pen is in their hands, I can still give them a pretty darn good pen to write with.

2. Personal feelings: I guess besides just feeling like a good Samaritan  I guess I also have that 'feeling' that I should do it.

3. What am I doing? Sometimes  I forget about myself and can throw myself under a bus for others (hopefully not literally!) But why? Why help someone that might not repay, or even WANT to stay in my life? I guess its just I love people... The worst feeling is feeling alone, and I guess I don't want people to leave me. Probably one of my biggest traits about me is integrity. I want the truth, and honesty to win in all situations. I want people to stay in my life, because they are beautiful, smart and caring people too.

4. Its my way of saying I love it that you are in my life: Just like many other humans, I want to be able to show how much people mean to me. While everyone has their own way of showing this, I feel as if my 'good deeds' are my way of showing these feelings.

I guess this is the reason why sometimes I can appear 'too nice' or become 'instantly friend zoned ' While it really sucks a lot of the time, I shouldn't change who I am for another person, but I will admit, sometimes it is hard.

Drama in life - Go away

I have escaped you for the longest time, yet you finally caught me,
Drama of life, please set me free,
I don't like you, its simple as that,
Just leave me alone you crazy cat!

I want to live my teen years with out the crap that nears,
Drama in high school, work and life wtf its just out there I hears,
I don't want to lose friends or others in my life,
So hitch a ride on a bus and I'll also give you a knife.

Drama, Drama go away,
Come again, no wait, just stay away, not some other day,
I want to live my life, with honesty, justice and fun,
Not lies and gossip; just fun in the sun.

DRAMA IN LIFE... GO AWAY! I want to live my life!

Writers Block

Auug, the 'wonderful' thing. Doesn't matter if it takes the form of no motivation, distractions, procrastination, or even just a blank mind, writers block seriously drives me mad.

Everyone seems to have their own way of tackling it. Some run, some play games, some hangout with friends, and some do many other things, but I have no clue how to get rid of it. Personally, I just wait for it to go away. One of the things I do is just start writing. You may not know what you are writing about, but JUST START. Once you've started, your brain seems to wake up, and ideas finally come to your head. Well, for me anyways. Luckily  my mother is a writer and showed me this trick. It works (some of the time) but a lot of the time, I am stuck waiting at my computer or notepad; yearning to write, yet lack the words. Sometimes, I also go out for a run just to get the mind pumping and clear. Anyone have any other ideas in getting rid of writers block?

Super Arrow: The Dream Lives

The beauty from ww.superarrow.ca/

Personalty, I believe that the Super Arrow, even if it may be just a dream of many Canadians including myself, it is the best choice for the future of Canadian aviation as well as Canadian defense. Just like when the Arrow was first developed in the 50's, the Super Arrow would be a much better choice than the F-35. Much cheaper, better specifications and a Canadian aircraft that would be built by Canadians, even the idea can make one drool.

While it might be true it is just a dream now, this is how all great things start.

Goodbye Lucas Arts...

I still cannot believe the news. Ever since I was a child, Lucas Arts has been such an influential company in my life. From creating the Star wars franchise with a bundle of classic games and Lego, etc... To Indiana Jones to even amazing advancements in media technology, Lucas Arts being shut down after being recently acquired by Disney is truly a heart stopper to people around the world.

The first real time I experienced Lucas Arts was my N64 with Star Wars: Rouge Squadron. The games continued after that, and it gave me a real insight into the world of Sci-fy and its many worlds and places where it's creators can take you. I really do find it sad that this remarkable group of people and ideas is being shut down by Disney. Angry Lucas Arts fans all around the world cry for this developers sad departure.

What are your fondest memories of LucasArts? Share your thoughts bellow!

Remember your friends...

Remember your friends, every night and day,
They can get you out of a pickle, well, that's what they say,
Through the good and the bad, the ugly and the fun,
Remember who your friends are, and they will remember you, as much as the sun.

Share the goals and dreams, the loves and fame,
But never forget the friend who gets you there in this game,
Friends help solve problems and are honest with you,
They want you to succeed, and you should hope for them too.

When your high in the sky, and living your life,
Never turn your back on a friend, or sharpen the knife,
Jealousy, greed, hate are easy to fall to,
Don't do it, don't look at it, please, I plead to you.

Cherish and love your friends every single day,
It's true that some friends go, but still, many stay,
Never throw them in the trash, I warn you,
Friends are a special part of life, maybe even a gift too.

Running

Running is personally one of my favorite hobbies/sports (yes, I believe it is a sport, especially cross country running) It truly is a magical feeling when you introduce running into your daily routine, and it incredibly rewarding when you reach personal milestones in distance, times and other self-created goals.

It really is one of the best metaphors for "practice makes perfect." Starting off with one kilometre when I was twelve, I can now run above twenty kilometres in a fairly decent time at an age of seventeen. It really is amazing what a little bit of hard work can do.

Running can be a true joy in life, and can help you get stress off of your chest, while giving you some "me time" and a rush of endorphins to give you that "feel happy" feeling. Running helps with physical health, as well as mental and spiritual health. Especially when you reach one of your goals.

While also being an amazing way to meet new people, it really is a fantastic way to vent, and an easy way to have some fun too. I love to run.

Iceland: Canada's turn to be the sheild

Picture and article here

As a Canadian, I am truly proud of our brave men and woman in our Canadian Armed Forces. This is just another contribution to NATO, yet the pictures still give an amazing emotion of what it is to be a Canadian.Iceland does not have their own military, so it relies on the various NATO nations to take shifts to protect its borders. Now it is Canada's turn. This is just a subtle reminder how important Canada really is to NATO, as well as the world. From Afghanistan, to Iceland to even here at home, the men and woman in CADPAT serve to make a better world. Here is a "Thank you" from a fellow Canadian!
